How the gb to mb converter calculation works
Using the decimal definition, 1 GB = 1,000 MB:
megabytes = gigabytes × 1000
If you need the binary figure that Windows displays, multiply by 1,024 instead — 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. Which one is right depends entirely on who wrote the number you are converting.
Common sizes:
- 1 GB → 1,000 MB
- 5 GB → 5,000 MB
- 25 GB → 25,000 MB (a typical mobile plan)
- 50 GB → 50,000 MB (a Blu-ray disc)
Where the conversion is actually needed:
Email attachment limits are quoted in MB — Gmail allows 25 MB, most corporate servers 10–20 MB. A 1 GB video is 1,000 MB, forty times over the limit, which is why large files go via a link rather than an attachment.
Mobile data. Carriers bill in GB but apps report usage in MB. Streaming video runs roughly 1 GB per hour at 1080p and about 3 GB per hour at 4K — so a 25 GB plan is around 25 hours of HD or 8 hours of 4K.
Upload caps. Many platforms cap uploads in MB while users think in GB: a 500 MB limit is half a gigabyte, and a 2 GB file is four times over.
Note the bit/byte distinction too. Broadband is sold in megabits per second (Mbps), not megabytes. Divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection transfers about 12.5 MB per second, so a 1 GB file takes roughly 80 seconds at full speed.
