These tools use the standard clinical formulas — Mifflin-St Jeor for metabolic rate, the WHO categories for body mass index, Naegele's rule for pregnancy dating — and each page explains not just how the formula works but where it stops being reliable.

That second part matters. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Calorie equations carry a margin of error of around 10%. A due date is the centre of a distribution, and only about 4% of babies arrive on it. Knowing the limits of a number is part of using it well.
