How the psi to bar converter calculation works

One psi is 0.0689476 bar:

bar = psi × 0.0689476

A bar is defined as exactly 100,000 pascals, which is very close to atmospheric pressure at sea level — 1 atm is 1.01325 bar, or 14.696 psi. That near-equality is the whole point of the unit: one bar is "about one atmosphere", which makes pressure readings intuitive.

Tyre pressures are the everyday case, and the numbers on the two scales look nothing alike:

psi bar Typical use
30 2.07 Small car front
32 2.21 Common car pressure
35 2.41 Loaded car, larger tyres
40 2.76 Van, or high-load setting
100 6.89 Road bicycle tyre
130 8.96 Track bicycle tyre

A European car door placard gives bar; an American gauge reads psi. A tyre at "2.2" on a European placard needs 32 psi, not 22 — and inflating to 22 psi is dangerously soft.

Gauge versus absolute. Tyre gauges read gauge pressure, meaning pressure above atmospheric. A tyre reading 32 psi holds 46.7 psi absolute. Scientific and refrigeration work uses absolute (psia); everything automotive uses gauge (psig). Mixing them is a one-atmosphere error.

Espresso machines are specified at 9 bar, which is 130.5 psi — the standard extraction pressure. Home machines claiming "15 bar" (217.6 psi) are quoting pump capability, not brew pressure.

For a quick figure, divide psi by 14.5.
