BMI vs Body Fat Percentage: Which Should You Track?

BMI classifies most professional athletes as overweight. It is still useful — but not for the thing most people use it for. Here is what each measure actually tells you.

BMI is weight divided by height squared. That is the whole calculation, and it explains both why it is useful and why it fails.

It knows nothing about what the weight is made of.

Where BMI breaks

A 100 kg rugby forward and a 100 kg sedentary man of the same height have an identical BMI and completely different bodies. This is not a rare edge case: a large proportion of professional rugby players and NFL linemen are classified obese by BMI.

The failure runs the other way too. Someone with low muscle mass and high body fat can sit comfortably in the "healthy" BMI range while carrying a genuinely unhealthy amount of fat — sometimes called normal weight obesity, and it is easy to miss precisely because the number looks fine.

BMI also does not distinguish where fat sits. Visceral fat around the organs carries substantially more metabolic risk than subcutaneous fat, and BMI cannot see the difference at all.

What BMI is actually for

It was designed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s as a population statistic, not an individual diagnostic — and at that job it is genuinely good. It needs only a scale and a tape, it correlates well with health outcomes across large groups, and it costs nothing.

For a health service tracking a national trend, BMI is the right tool. For you, individually, it is the weaker of the two measures — which is why the BMI calculator reports the category and the healthy weight range rather than treating the number as a verdict.

What body fat percentage tells you instead

Body fat percentage measures composition directly: what proportion of your mass is fat rather than muscle, bone, organs and water.

The healthy ranges differ by sex, and substantially:

Women require considerably more essential fat than men — it supports hormonal and reproductive function. Applying the male scale to a woman makes a perfectly healthy figure look like a problem, which is the single most common misreading of these numbers.

How to measure it without a lab

The US Navy method needs a tape measure and nothing else. It estimates body fat from the difference between your waist and neck (plus hips, for women) relative to your height.

Accuracy is roughly ±3 percentage points against a DEXA scan — good enough to track a trend, not good enough to treat as exact. The body fat calculator does the arithmetic.

Technique matters more than the equation, because the calculation works on the difference between measurements and small errors compound:

  • Neck — just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly down at the front
  • Waist — men at the navel, women at the narrowest point, relaxed, at the end of a normal breath out. Do not pull it in.
  • Hips — widest point, feet together

Measure at the same time of day, take three readings, average them.

Why the scale can stay still while things improve

Gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time keeps weight constant while composition changes substantially. It happens most readily in people new to resistance training or returning after a break — and it is precisely the situation where tracking weight alone tells you nothing is happening when a great deal is.

This is the strongest practical argument for tracking both.

What about body fat scales?

Bioelectrical impedance scales pass a small current through the body and infer composition from the resistance. They are convenient and heavily affected by hydration, food and skin temperature — readings can swing several percentage points between morning and evening on the same body.

They are fine for spotting a trend if you always measure under identical conditions. For a single accurate number, DEXA is the practical gold standard.

Use both, for different questions

  • BMI answers "am I in a broadly healthy weight range for my height?" — a fast screen, and reliable unless you are unusually muscular.
  • Body fat percentage answers "what is my weight made of?" — the better measure for anyone training, and the one that catches what BMI misses.
