How the celsius to fahrenheit converter calculation works

Temperature is the one conversion on this list that is not a simple multiplication, because the two scales have different zero points as well as different step sizes:

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

The 9/5 accounts for the fact that a Fahrenheit degree is smaller — there are 180 Fahrenheit degrees between freezing and boiling water where Celsius has 100. The + 32 shifts the scale so that water freezes at 32°F rather than 0°F.

Work through 20°C, a mild spring day: 20 × 9/5 = 36, plus 32 = 68°F. Body temperature at 37°C becomes 37 × 1.8 = 66.6, plus 32 = 98.6°F — the familiar number. And a 200°C oven is 200 × 1.8 + 32 = 392°F, which is why recipes usually round it to 400°F.

Some anchors worth memorizing:

  • -40 is the same in both scales. It is the single point where the two lines cross, which makes it an easy sanity check on any conversion formula.
  • Double it and add 30 for a rough estimate. 20°C → 70°F against a true 68°F. The approximation drifts at extremes but is fine for weather.
  • A 1°C change equals a 1.8°F change. When you are converting a difference rather than a temperature — a thermostat adjustment, say — you multiply by 1.8 and skip the +32 entirely.

To convert back, subtract 32 first and then multiply by 5/9. Order matters: doing it the other way around gives the wrong answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (1.8), then add 32.

How many degrees Fahrenheit are in 10 °C?

10 °C equals 50.00 °F. The reference table on this page lists the other values people look up most often.

How do I convert degrees Fahrenheit back to degrees Celsius?

Subtract 32 first, then multiply by 5/9. Doing it in the other order gives the wrong answer.

Is this conversion exact?

Yes. The relationship between Celsius and Fahrenheit is defined exactly, so the only imprecision comes from rounding the result.
