The centimeters people look up most

152.4 cm = 5 ft
Exactly five feet, by definition rather than by measurement - the foot has been defined as 30.48 cm since 1959.
165 cm = 5.4134 ft
Five foot five, and close to the average adult female height across much of Europe.
175 cm = 5.7415 ft
A hair under five foot nine, and a common rounding point on any form that asks for height in feet.
180 cm = 5.9055 ft
5 ft 10.9 in. Note the decimal: 5.9055 feet is not 5 ft 9 in, and reading it that way loses nearly two inches.
183 cm = 6.0039 ft
The genuine six-foot mark is 182.88 cm, so anything quoted as a round six foot was rounded from somewhere inside a 2.5 cm band.

How the cm to feet calculation works

One foot is exactly 30.48 centimeters, so:

feet = centimeters ÷ 30.48

Almost everyone converting cm to feet is converting a height, and the decimal answer is rarely what they actually want. 180 cm is 5.9055 feet — which is not 5 feet 9 inches. It is 5 feet plus 0.9055 of a foot, and 0.9055 × 12 = 10.87, so 180 cm is 5 ft 10.9 in.

That two-step is the whole skill:

  1. Divide by 30.48 to get decimal feet.
  2. Take everything after the decimal point and multiply by 12 for the inches.

Worked through the heights people look up most:

  • 160 cm → 5.2493 ft → 5 ft 3.0 in
  • 170 cm → 5.5774 ft → 5 ft 6.9 in
  • 175 cm → 5.7415 ft → 5 ft 9.0 in
  • 183 cm → 6.0039 ft → 6 ft 0.0 in (the classic "six foot" mark)
  • 190 cm → 6.2336 ft → 6 ft 2.8 in

Useful anchors: 152.4 cm is exactly 5 feet and 182.88 cm is exactly 6 feet. If a height is quoted as a round 5 ft or 6 ft, it has already been rounded — the underlying measurement was somewhere in a 2.5 cm band either side.

For the reverse, multiply feet by 30.48, remembering to convert any inches at 2.54 cm each first.

Frequently asked questions

Do people really measure shorter in the evening?

Yes, and by more than the rounding in this conversion. The discs in the spine compress under load through the day, so an adult typically measures one to two centimetres shorter in the evening than first thing in the morning - around half an inch. If a height from a clinic disagrees with the one on a passport, the time of day may account for the whole difference.

Why is the same person 5 ft 10 on one form and 5 ft 11 on another?

Because the inches get rounded and 180 cm sits almost exactly on a boundary. It works out at 5 ft 10.87 in, which rounds up to 5 ft 11 but is very often written down as 5 ft 10 by simply dropping the fraction. A centimetre either side moves the answer. Where it matters, quote the centimetres, which have no such boundary in them.

Is height quoted in feet and inches outside the US and UK?

More widely than most people expect. Alongside the United States and the United Kingdom, height is routinely given in feet and inches across India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, where road distances and everything else are metric. Ireland and Canada use both informally. So a height written in feet is not a reliable signal of which country a document came from.
