How the feet to meters calculation works

One foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, so:

That number is a definition, not a measurement. The foot is defined as 12 inches and the inch as 2.54 cm, which makes a foot exactly 30.48 cm by construction.

A worked example: a room advertised as 12 feet across is 12 × 0.3048 = 3.66 meters. A 6 foot doorway is 1.83 m. An 8 foot ceiling — standard in US housing — is 2.44 m, noticeably lower than the 2.5 m or more common in newer European builds.

Where this conversion matters most:

Aviation altitudes are in feet almost everywhere. A cruising altitude of 35,000 ft is 10,668 m, which is why it is usually quoted as "about 10.7 km". Russia and China moved to metric flight levels; most of the world did not.
A mile is 5,280 feet, or 1,609.34 m. That awkward number is the reason mile-to-kilometre conversion never has a clean shortcut.
Heights are usually feet and inches. Convert the inches separately: 5 ft 10 in is 5 × 0.3048 + 10 × 0.0254 = 1.778 m. Entering "5.10" here gives 1.554 m, which is wrong — the decimal is not the inches.

Is the US survey foot different from the international foot?

It was, and it was retired at the end of 2022. The US survey foot was defined as 1200/3937 metres, two parts per million longer than the international foot of exactly 0.3048 m. That is about a foot over a hundred miles - invisible on a building, significant on a state plane coordinate. American surveying now uses the international foot, but older records still carry the survey one.

Does a head of water in feet convert the same way?

Yes, because a head is a length like any other and converts at 0.3048. The useful anchors are that one foot of water is 0.433 psi and one metre is 0.0981 bar, so a pump rated for 100 ft of head lifts 30.5 m and develops about 43 psi. Those pressure equivalents hold for water only - a denser or lighter fluid changes them.

What is a linear foot when timber is priced by it?

Simply a foot of length, said that way to distinguish it from a square foot or a board foot when material is priced by the running length. It converts at 0.3048 m like any other foot. A board foot is a different quantity again: a volume of one square foot by one inch thick, about 2,360 cubic centimetres, which no length conversion will reach.
