How the feet to inches converter calculation works

The trap here is not the arithmetic, it is the notation. A height written as 5.5 feet is not 5 feet 5 inches. Half a foot is six inches, so 5.5 ft = 66 inches = 5 ft 6 in. If you meant 5 ft 5 in, that is 5.4167 ft, or 65 inches. Getting this backwards is the single most common error in height conversion, and it is worth 1–2 inches every time.
