1 ft = 12 in: Twelve inches, by definition. The one conversion in the imperial system that is genuinely simple.
5 ft = 60 in: Sixty inches, and the point most height charts start counting from.
5.5 ft = 66 in: Five foot six, or 66 inches. The decimal form catches people out - 5.5 ft is not 5 ft 5 in.
6 ft = 72 in: Seventy-two inches. A standard US door is 80 inches, so six foot leaves eight inches of clearance.
8 ft = 96 in: Ninety-six inches - the long edge of a plywood sheet, and the reason rooms are so often framed to it.

How the feet to inches calculation works

There are 12 inches in a foot, so:

inches = feet × 12

This is the one conversion on the site with no measurement behind it at all — it is a definition, and has been since long before anything was standardised in metric.

The trap here is not the arithmetic, it is the notation. A height written as 5.5 feet is not 5 feet 5 inches. Half a foot is six inches, so 5.5 ft = 66 inches = 5 ft 6 in. If you meant 5 ft 5 in, that is 5.4167 ft, or 65 inches. Getting this backwards is the single most common error in height conversion, and it is worth 1–2 inches every time.

To convert a feet-and-inches height to inches directly, multiply the feet by 12 and add the inches:

5 ft 4 in → 60 + 4 = 64 in
5 ft 10 in → 60 + 10 = 70 in
6 ft 2 in → 72 + 2 = 74 in

Where whole feet matter:

Lumber is sold in even foot lengths. An 8-foot stud is 96 inches; a 12-foot board is 144 inches. Cut lists are almost always in inches, so this conversion happens on every project.
Ceiling heights. An 8 ft ceiling is 96 in, and a 9 ft ceiling is 108 in — the 12-inch difference that decides whether tall cabinets fit.

What do the ′ and ″ marks after a number mean?

A single prime means feet and a double prime means inches, so 5′ 9″ is five feet nine inches, or 69 inches. They are not an apostrophe and a quotation mark, though almost everyone types them that way. Architectural drawings use the same pair and often hyphenate the two parts, so a dimension written 5′-9″ reads exactly the same.

Why is a foot twelve inches rather than ten?

Because twelve divides cleanly by two, three, four and six, which matters when you are halving and thirding a length on site with nothing but a tape. A third of a foot is four inches; a third of a decimal foot is 0.333 of one. That divisibility is why the building trades kept the unit long after science left it, and why cut lists are still written in inches.

Do surveyors really use decimal feet?

They do, and it is the one trade where a decimal foot means literally that. US civil engineering and land surveying work in tenths and hundredths of a foot, with tapes marked accordingly, so 5.75 ft on a site plan is 5.75 feet - which here happens to equal 5 ft 9 in. Architectural sheets from the same project will use feet and inches, so check which discipline drew it.
