How the yards to meters calculation works

A yard is exactly 0.9144 meters:

The number is exact by definition — the international yard was fixed at 0.9144 m in 1959, replacing several slightly different national yards that had been in use until then.

Golf is where most people meet this conversion. Course yardages are in yards in the US, UK and Australia, and in metres across most of continental Europe and Asia. A hole listed at 400 yards is 365.8 metres, so a card in metres reads about 8.5% shorter than the same course in yards. Playing a 150-yard club at a 150-metre marker leaves you 12.8 m short — more than a full club for most players.

Other cases:

American football. 100 yards between goal lines is 91.44 m; a 10-yard first down is 9.14 m.
Fabric. A yard is 91.44 cm against a metre's 100 cm, so a metre gives you 8.6 cm more per unit. Buying 5 yards when a pattern calls for 5 metres leaves you 43 cm short.
Track. The 440-yard quarter mile was 402.34 m, which is why it was replaced by the 400 m rather than converted to it.

For rough work, take 10% off: 400 yards → 360, against a true 365.8. That is close for estimating but not for club selection.

Why is a rugby pitch in metres and an American football field in yards?

Each sport laid out its ground in its own unit and named the markings after it. A rugby union field runs up to 100 m between the goal lines, with the 22 m line named for the measurement; an American football field is 100 yards, or 91.44 m. Converted, rugby’s 22 is 24.06 yards, which is why one sport’s markings never produce round numbers on the other’s ground.

Does a square yard convert on the same factor as a yard?

No - it squares. A square yard is 0.8361 m², so a 20 sq yd room is 16.72 m². Carpet and turf are sold by the square yard in the United States and by the square metre in Britain, and using the linear 0.9144 on an area leaves you about 9% over, which on a carpet order is most of a roll end.

Are yards still used officially in Britain?

On the roads, yes. British signs give short distances in yards - a junction 300 yds ahead - while everything else on the network is in miles. Those signs are placed at imperial intervals rather than converted from metric ones, so 300 yds really is 274 m of road. For trade the metre is the legal unit, with imperial figures allowed only alongside it.
