Grams to Ounces Converter

An avoirdupois ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams, so:

ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125

The long decimal is a consequence, not a choice: the pound was defined as 0.45359237 kg, and an ounce is one sixteenth of a pound.

Cooking is the main use, and the main trap. A recipe asking for "8 oz of flour" means 8 ounces of weight — 226.8 g. But "8 fl oz" is a volume, and 8 fl oz of flour weighs only about 125 g. The two units share a name and measure entirely different things. If a recipe mixes them, weight ounces are for solids and fluid ounces are for liquids.

Common kitchen quantities:

• 100 g → 3.53 oz (a standard chocolate bar)
• 250 g → 8.82 oz (a European butter block)
• 454 g → 16.00 oz — exactly one pound, which is why US butter comes in 1 lb boxes
• 500 g → 17.64 oz

Postage is the other everyday case. A first-class US letter is capped at 3.5 oz, or 99.2 g. Royal Mail's large-letter threshold is 100 g, which is 3.53 oz — near enough that a letter at the US limit sits right on the UK one.

For rough work, divide by 28 and you are within 1.2%. For anything baked, weigh it properly: bread and pastry are the recipes least forgiving of a 2% error.
