A hectare is 10,000 m² — a square 100 metres on a side. That makes it the only common land unit with an obvious shape, and a genuinely useful mental image: pace out 100 metres twice and you have walked two sides of a hectare.

Yield figures need care: tonnes per hectare and bushels per acre are both areas and both quantities, so converting a yield means converting twice. One tonne per hectare of wheat is about 14.9 bushels per acre.

What is an are?

The unit the hectare is built from: an are is 100 m², a square ten metres on a side, and a hectare is a hundred of them. It is still used for small plots across France, Germany and much of central Europe, where a garden might be advertised at 8 ares - 800 m², or 0.198 acres. The symbol is a, so 8 a and 8 ha differ by a factor of a hundred.

Which unit does UK land registration use?

Hectares. HM Land Registry records areas in hectares and square metres, and agricultural payments are administered in hectares, while the same land is advertised in acres by agents and discussed in acres by the people farming it. One field can therefore appear as 4.05 ha on the title and 10 acres in the sale particulars - the same area recorded twice in two systems.

How accurate is two and a half acres to the hectare?

Close enough for conversation and not for a contract. The true figure is 2.47105, so rounding to two and a half overstates by 1.2% - about three acres on a hundred-hectare holding. For a sale, a subsidy claim or a stocking rate, use the full factor. For picturing how big a field is, the round number is perfectly serviceable.
