Hectares to Acres Converter

A hectare is 2.4710538 acres:

A hectare is 10,000 m² — a square 100 metres on a side. That makes it the only common land unit with an obvious shape, and a genuinely useful mental image: pace out 100 metres twice and you have walked two sides of a hectare.

• 100 ha (a square kilometre) → 247.105 acres

A square kilometre is 100 hectares, or 247.1 acres, and there are 640 acres in a square mile — which is why American land was surveyed into one-square-mile sections and quarter-sections of 160 acres. The Homestead Act's famous "160 acres" is one quarter of a section, or 64.75 ha.

Forestry and conservation report in hectares almost universally, including in the US and UK, because international datasets standardised on them. A wildfire reported as burning 50,000 hectares has covered 123,553 acres — American outlets usually convert, which is why the same fire is quoted with two very different numbers.

Yield figures need care: tonnes per hectare and bushels per acre are both areas and both quantities, so converting a yield means converting twice. One tonne per hectare of wheat is about 14.9 bushels per acre.
