The stone survives in exactly one place: British and Irish body weight. Nothing else is measured in it, and it appears on no other country's scales — which is why converting into it is almost always about making a number legible to someone in the UK.

The decimal is not the pounds. 70 kg is 11.0231 stone, and that 0.0231 is a fraction of a stone, not of a pound. Multiply it by 14: 0.0231 × 14 = 0.32, so 70 kg is 11 st 0.3 lb. Reading "11.02 stone" as "11 stone 2 pounds" overstates the weight by nearly 2 lb.

Two notes:

• Medical settings use kilograms, including in the UK, because drug dosing is per kilogram. A weight given in stone will be converted before anything is prescribed.
• The US uses pounds alone, not stone. An American reading "12 stone" will not recognise it; give them 168 lb instead.
