The stone survives in exactly one place: British and Irish body weight. Nothing else is measured in it, and it appears on no other country's scales — which is why converting into it is almost always about making a number legible to someone in the UK.

The decimal is not the pounds. 70 kg is 11.0231 stone, and that 0.0231 is a fraction of a stone, not of a pound. Multiply it by 14: 0.0231 × 14 = 0.32, so 70 kg is 11 st 0.3 lb. Reading "11.02 stone" as "11 stone 2 pounds" overstates the weight by nearly 2 lb.

Medical settings use kilograms, including in the UK, because drug dosing is per kilogram. A weight given in stone will be converted before anything is prescribed.

Why is body weight the only thing still measured in stone?

Because it was never worth changing. Britain metricated trade and medicine through the 1970s and 1980s, and body weight sat outside both - nobody sells you your own weight, and scale makers kept a stone dial because buyers wanted one. The result is a unit used by two countries for one purpose, with no role in trade and none in a medical record.

Is 12 st 7 lb the same as 12.5 stone?

In this one case yes, because seven pounds is exactly half a stone - 12.5 st is 79.38 kg either way. That coincidence is precisely what makes the general mistake so easy. 12 st 5 lb is 12.36 stone, not 12.5, and reading the loose pounds straight into the decimal there overstates the weight by nearly 2 lb.

What weight in stone counts as a healthy BMI?

There is no single answer, because BMI depends on height. For an adult of 1.75 m the 18.5 to 25 band runs from 56.7 kg to 76.6 kg, which is 8 st 13 lb to 12 st 1 lb. At 1.60 m the same band is 47.4 to 64 kg, or 7 st 6 lb to 10 st 1 lb. Converting a weight tells you nothing about the band without the height beside it.
