Stone to Pounds Converter

A stone is exactly 14 pounds:

pounds = stone × 14

Both units are imperial, so this conversion is a whole number with no rounding anywhere in it. It exists because the two halves of the English-speaking world diverged: Britain kept the stone for body weight, and America dropped it entirely and counts in pounds alone.

That is the practical use. An American will not know what 12 stone means. Give them 168 lb.

Handling the mixed notation. UK weights are usually written as stone-and-pounds — "11 st 6 lb" — rather than as a decimal. To get total pounds, multiply the stone by 14 and add the loose pounds: 11 × 14 + 6 = 160 lb.

Going the other way, divide the pounds by 14. The whole number is the stone, and the remainder is the pounds: 160 ÷ 14 = 11 remainder 6, so 11 st 6 lb. Note that 11.43 stone is the decimal form of the same weight — the .43 is 43% of a stone, which is those 6 pounds.

One historical note worth knowing: the stone was not always 14 pounds. It varied by trade and by commodity — wool, meat and cheese each had their own — until it was standardised in the nineteenth century. The 14 lb figure is the one that survived.
