The US fluid ounces people look up most
- 1.5 fl oz = 44.36 mL
- A standard American shot, against the UK’s 25 or 35 ml measure and Europe’s 40 ml - which is why an American cocktail made with UK measures comes out weaker.
- 8 fl oz = 236.588 mL
- One US cup - a metric cup is 250 ml, so recipes do not swap cleanly between the two.
- 12 fl oz = 354.882 mL
- The standard American soda can, against the 330 ml can used across Europe.
- 16 fl oz = 473.176 mL
- A US pint - the imperial pint is 568 ml, and the gap is what shrinks a pint of beer in America.
How the ounces to ml calculation works
A US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 milliliters:
milliliters = US fluid ounces × 29.57353
This converter uses the US fluid ounce. The imperial one, still printed on some British packaging, is 28.4131 ml — roughly 4% smaller. On a single measure the difference is a millilitre or two; across a 20 fl oz imperial pint against a 16 fl oz US pint, it is 95 ml.
Bar measures are the most common reason to convert:
- 1 fl oz → 29.57 ml
- 1.5 fl oz (a standard US shot) → 44.36 ml, against the UK's 25 ml or 35 ml measures and Europe's 40 ml
- 2 fl oz (a double) → 59.15 ml
- 4 fl oz → 118.29 ml
An American cocktail recipe scaled with 25 ml measures comes out 44% weaker than intended, which is enough to change the drink rather than just soften it.
Other volumes:
- 8 fl oz (a US cup) → 236.59 ml
- 12 fl oz (a soda can) → 354.88 ml
- 16 fl oz (a US pint) → 473.18 ml
- 20 fl oz (an imperial pint, in imperial ounces) → 568.26 ml
- 32 fl oz (a quart) → 946.35 ml
Baby bottles are marked in both, and the graduations rarely line up: a bottle marked 4 oz and 120 ml is rounding 118.29 up. Follow whichever scale the formula instructions use, and do not mix them within a feed.
For quick work, multiply by 30.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the cup on a coffee machine?
Not eight fluid ounces. A drip coffee maker’s cup is usually 5 fl oz, about 148 ml, so a twelve-cup carafe holds 60 fl oz - 1.77 L - rather than the 96 fl oz a kitchen cup would imply. Japanese rice cookers do the same thing with a 180 ml cup. Trust the markings on the carafe rather than the number on the box.
Does a fluid ounce of honey weigh the same as one of water?
No, and honey is the extreme. A US fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.6 g; the same volume of honey weighs around 42 g, of golden syrup about 43 g, and of oil about 27 g. A recipe that gives sticky ingredients by volume is asking you to accept that spread, which is why modern baking books give them in grams instead.
How much is a fifth of spirits?
A fifth of a US gallon, which is 25.6 fl oz or 757 ml. American spirits were bottled at that size until the trade went metric in 1980 and settled on 750 ml - 25.4 fl oz, about 7 ml less. The word survived the change, so a fifth now means a 750 ml bottle that is no longer a fifth of anything.
