A US pint of blueberries or strawberries is a dry pint, not this one — dry measure uses a different pint of 550.6 ml. Produce sold "by the pint" in America is measured by that larger dry pint, which is why a pint of berries does not fit in a pint glass.

Beer duty in the UK is calculated per imperial pint, and a licensed pint must be a full 568 ml — which is why British glasses carry a crown or CE mark and a line.

Why is a UK pint bigger than a US one?

Because Britain changed its definition and America did not. The US pint descends from the old English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, which the colonies kept. In 1824 Parliament redefined the imperial gallon as the volume of ten pounds of water, making it 4.546 L, and every subdivision grew with it. The pint kept its name through that change, so two countries now share a word for two volumes.

Does British milk still have to be sold in pints?

Only in particular cases. Draught beer and cider must be sold in pints, half pints or third pints, and milk in returnable glass bottles may still be sold by the pint. Milk in plastic bottles is sold in litres, which is why a large supermarket bottle is labelled 2.272 L - four imperial pints converted rather than rounded to a tidy metric figure.

What counts as a pint elsewhere in Europe?

Usually half a litre, which is 500 ml - about 12% less than an imperial pint and 6% more than a US one. German beer comes in 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 L glasses, with the full-litre Maß at festivals, while the Netherlands and Belgium pour smaller again, often 250 or 330 ml. Only Britain, Ireland and parts of the Commonwealth pour a pint as such.
